Two Saudis die of MERS virus

RIYADH (AFP) – Two Saudis have died after contracting the MERS coronavirus, the health ministry said on Thursday, bringing the total number of fatalities from the SARS-like virus in the kingdom to 49.

A 75-year-old woman, who had suffered chronic illnesses, died in the western city of Medina, while a man, 83, who also had chronic diseases, died in the capital, the ministry website said.

The ministry also registered three new cases, bringing to 107 the total number of infections in Saudi Arabia, the country worst hit by the virus.

The World Health Organisation said on September 7 that it has been informed of 114 cases of MERS infection worldwide, among them 54 fatalities.

Experts are struggling to understand MERS -- Middle East Respiratory Syndrome -- for which there is still no vaccine.

It is considered a cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died.

Like SARS, MERS is thought to have jumped from animals to humans, and it shares the former's flu-like symptoms -- but differs by also causing kidney failure.

The MERS problem persists in Saudi Arabia, which is gearing up to host around two million Muslims in October for the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Authorities have urged the elderly and chronically ill to avoid the hajj this year and have cut back on the numbers of people they will allow to perform the pilgrimage.

เปิดผลวิจัยพบ “คนขับ-กระเป๋ารถเมล์” ติดเชื้อวัณโรคถึงร้อยละ 33.15 เหตุอยู่ในสถานที่อากาศถ่ายเทจำกัดนาน ชี้ชัดเป็นกลุ่มเสี่ยงรับเชื้อจากผู้โดยสารและแพร่ไปยังผู้โดยสารคนอื่น เผยกลุ่มความดัน เบาหวาน หัวใจ เสี่ยงรับเชื้อมากกว่ากลุ่มอื่นร้อยละ 38.14 จี้เร่งค้นหาผู้ป่วยช่วยตัดวงจรแพร่เชื้อ

นายเบญจวรรณ เพชรสุขศิริ นักวิจัยสถาบันวิจัยวิทยาศาสตร์ กรมวิทยาศาสตร์การแพทย์ นำเสนอเรื่อง “อัตราการติดเชื้อวัณโรคในกลุ่มผู้ให้บริการบนรถสาธารณะ ปี 2556” ในงานประชุมวิชาการกระทรวงสาธารณสุขประจำปี 2556 ว่า กรมวิทยาศาสตร์การแพทย์ ได้ร่วมกับบริษัทขนส่ง จำกัด ประเมินความเสี่ยงของผู้ติดเชื้อวัณโรค ในกลุ่มผู้ให้บริการบนรถโดยสาร บขส.เพื่อสร้างความตระหนักและเฝ้าระวังหยุดยั้งวัณโรค ซึ่งการค้นหาผู้ป่วยจะช่วยตัดวงจรการแพร่เชื้อได้ด้วย ซึ่งผู้ขับขี่รถสาธารณะถือเป็นกลุ่มเสี่ยงที่ต้องอยู่ในสถานที่อากาศถ่ายเทจำกัดเป็นเวลานาน และต้องพบกับคนจำนวนมาก หากติดเชื้อหรือเป็นวัณโรค จึงถือเป็นผู้ที่จะสามารถแพร่และทำให้เกิดการติดต่อโรคไปสู่คนวงกว้างได้

นายเบญจวรรณ กล่าวอีกว่า จากการทดสอบเลือดตามความสมัครใจในกลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 1,252 ตัวอย่าง พบว่า อัตราการติดเชื้อวัณโรคในกลุ่มผู้ขับรถและพนักงานที่ให้บริการบนรถโดยสารสาธารณะ มีผลบวกคือติดเชื้อ ร้อยละ 33.15 ไม่พบการติดเชื้อ ร้อยละ 66.85 พนักงานชายให้ผลบวกร้อยละ 34.52 พนักงานหญิงให้ผลบวกร้อยละ 23.75 เมื่อวิเคราะห์ตามอายุ พบว่ากลุ่มอายุ 41-50 ปี ให้ผลบวกมากที่สุดร้อยละ 34.91 และจะพบในผู้ที่มีอายุงานระหว่าง 6-10 ปี มากที่สุด นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่าผู้ที่มีโรคประจำตัว คือ เบาหวาน ความดัน หัวใจ จะมีผลบวกสูงขึ้นกว่ากลุ่มอื่นร้อยละ 38.14 อย่างไรก็ตาม พนักงานที่ให้บริการบนรถสาธารณะมีอัตราการติดเชื้อวัณโรคสูงกว่าบุคคลทั่วไปที่มีสุขภาพดี โดยกลุ่มผู้ติดเชื้อที่ไม่แสดงอาการนั้น ถือเป็นกลุ่มที่ควรเฝ้าระวัง ซึ่งร้อยละ 10 ของวัณโรคระยะแฝงจะเสี่ยงเกิดวัณโรคปอดได้ภายใน 10 ปีด้วย

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) - update

4 October 2013 - WHO has been informed of an additional six laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in Saudi Arabia.

The six new patients are from Riyadh region with ages from 14 to 79 years old, of which three are women and three men. The dates of onset of the patients range from 15 to 26 September 2013. One patient has mild symptoms while the others are hospitalized. Three patients are contacts of previously confirmed cases with MERS-CoV, two are reported to have had no exposure to animals or a confirmed case, and there is no information on exposure of one patient.

Globally, from September 2012 to date, WHO has been informed of a total of 136 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including 58 deaths.

Based on the current situation and available information, WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and to carefully review any unusual patterns.

Health care providers are advised to maintain vigilance. Recent travellers returning from the Middle East who develop SARI should be tested for MERS-CoV as advised in the current surveillance recommendations.
